The Maltese experience
"Being in the middle of the Mediterranean, far from any civilization, where the human impact is less noticeable, nature appears in her best outfit."
Mystic Blue organised a two-week sailing trip to Malta in order to observe and record on video the wildlife encounters of this passage. Though the first 120 miles were quite exhausting as we had to fight our way against a strong southeast wind, nearly a gale, the rest of the journey was very rewarding.
Sailing across the deepest depths in the Mediterranean, the Ionian trench and the abyssal plain, we had many pleasant surprises...
a mola mola with 2 pilot fishes stayed with us for about 30 minutes giving us the opportunity to observe this strange creature...
stripped dolphins hanged around the bow again and again performing the most extraordinary acrobatics...
one of the 7 loggerhead sea turtles we encountered was suffocating at the surface but luckily found refuge on Tahita's deck for 40 minutes before continuing her trip safely...
many immigrants from the bird kingdom got a free ticket ride on our boat. I had a small sparrow nesting on my shoulder throughout my night shift!
This is the first in a series of sailing trips we plan to organise around the Mediterranean basin (from Greece to Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Malta, Turkey) in order to build up a greater understanding of the sea that surrounds us.
